Beetroot & Onion Chutney

  • 3lbs fresh beetroot , rinsed and finely chopped
  • 2lbs onions, peeled and roughly chopped
  • 1½lbs cooking apples, peeled and roughly chopped
  • ½lb Demerara sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 pint Malt vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of salt


  1. Mix all the ingredients together and cook in a large saucepan for 40-45 minutes.
  2. Put into jars (prepared as for jam); should yield 7-8lbs of chutney, and keeps well
